Frequently Asked Questions
Is this course for beginners? +
This course assumes you already know how to hold an e-file and have done gel manicures before. If you're brand new to Russian manicure, start with the Oval course first — it covers all the fundamentals from scratch. The Square course builds on that foundation.
Why do my square corners always turn round? +
This is the most common square problem. It usually happens because of file angle — if you're not holding the file at exactly 90 degrees to the free edge, the corners naturally round off. The filing lesson covers this specifically: how to guide yourself by the file's edge, why you make the shape sharp first then soften, and how to maintain 90 degrees consistently across all 10 nails.
What is the two-grip cuticle cutting method? +
The course teaches two scissor grips. The first enters the sinus and turns 90 degrees to cut along the cuticle line. The second is a more superficial grip at 45 degrees — used when the cuticle grows right onto the fold. Using both grips depending on the situation is what gives you a clean result without skipping areas or causing damage.
What is the hand-flip leveling trick? +
After applying leveling gel, you flip the hand palm-up and let gravity pull the product to the center naturally. The surface self-levels, you skip surface filing entirely, and both hands are done in 6 minutes 30 seconds. The lesson shows exactly how much product, when to flip, and what to look for in the center reflection before sending to the lamp.
Why is black polish used in this course? +
Black shows every flaw — every gap at the cuticle, every flooded sidewall, every uneven stroke. If your application looks good in black, it will look good in any color. It's a deliberate choice to make the teaching clearer and to give you a real test of your technique.
What is "filing after top coat" and why does it matter? +
After top coat cures, the free edge often thickens and small sagging spots appear. Most techs skip this step. Filing the edge and thinning sagging areas after curing — without scratching the color — is what gives the final result that thin, crisp, professional edge. The lesson shows exactly where and how to file at this stage.
What is the sidewall strengthening technique for thin nails? +
For thin, brittle nails that curl and break, standard leveling doesn't work — the nails flex during wear and lifting appears. The sidewall technique builds artificial thickness at the edges to prevent curling. It's different from polygel and faster for this specific situation. Two full lessons cover the technique in detail, from surface prep through final filing.
How long does it take to complete the course? +
The course has 10 lessons covering two complete clients. Most students watch all the content in 2–3 focused hours. It is completely self-paced — pause, rewind, and revisit any lesson at any time. Lifetime access is included.
Is a certificate included? +
Yes. A certificate of completion from VEL Academy is issued automatically after you finish all modules. You can display it in your salon, share it professionally, or add it to your portfolio.
